Richard Osman Steps Down from House of Games After 9 Years: What’s Next for the Show? (2026)

Prepare for a major shift in the world of television! Richard Osman, the beloved host of House of Games, is stepping down after an incredible nine-year run. But here's where it gets controversial: he's leaving to focus on his writing career, which has taken the world by storm with his Thursday Murder Club series.

Richard, at 55, has decided to bid farewell to his hosting duties, much like his previous exit from Pointless. In a heartfelt announcement on his podcast with Marina Hyde, he revealed his desire to dedicate more time to his hugely successful novels.

"I am leaving House of Games. It's time for someone else to make it their own. I'm happy to pass on the torch," he said.

Speaking on The Rest is Entertainment, Richard expressed his love for the show and the 800 episodes he's hosted. The series, produced by Remarkable Entertainment, has been a staple on BBC Two since 2017, with the ninth series currently airing.

"I've had an amazing time. Of course, I even met my wife through the show! But with writing, there comes a point where you have to let go and move on," he explained.

The BBC has confirmed that the show will continue, with a promise of a new host and the same incredible production team. Osman will complete a final week of filming, where he'll hand over the iconic red armchair to the next host.

"I'll miss it dearly, just as I did with Pointless. But sometimes, you have to make tough choices," he added.

His podcast co-host, Marina Hyde, thanked Richard for bringing joy to her household and many others.

"Looking forward to seeing Su Pollard's take on House of Games!" he joked.

Banijay, the production company, has officially confirmed the news, promising exciting plans for the show's future. Rob Unsworth, the head of daytime and early peak commissioning, praised Richard's contribution to the show's success.

"Richard Osman has made House of Games one of our most beloved shows. His impact has been immense, and we are incredibly grateful for his work. As we wish him all the best, we're also excited to introduce the next resident of the House of Games soon," Unsworth said.

So, what do you think? Are you sad to see Richard Osman go, or are you excited to see who will take over his iconic role? Let us know in the comments!

Richard Osman's House of Games is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
