A Towering Problem
On a typical Saturday morning, students were greeted with an unexpected sight - water, lots of it. With classes resuming on Monday, the university has asked residents to delay their return or seek alternative housing. But here's where it gets controversial - the extent of the damage and the number of affected students remains unclear.
Dave Isaacs, a university spokesperson, confirmed that every student resident was contacted after pipes burst. Kiersten Morgan, a second-year chemical engineering student and a resident of the third floor, shared her concerns. She expressed worry about her belongings, especially her wooden furniture. Morgan's roommate, who lives in Columbus, plans to assess the damage, but for now, they're in a state of uncertainty.
Assessing the Damage
Maintenance and housing teams are currently evaluating each room and the 12 residence floors to determine the full extent of the damage. Isaacs couldn't provide an exact count of affected students or the timing of the pipe burst. In an email sent at 9:54 a.m., students were informed of a primary pipe burst in the tower, with promises of updates throughout the day. The exact number of current tower residents remains unknown.
The university assures that it will continue to communicate with residents and provide alternative housing options as more details emerge. For non-local students, short-term residence has been arranged at Raney and Bowen House on the north campus.
A Familiar Tale?
This incident brings to mind the Lawrence Tower mold infestation in the fall of 2024. Students were forced to move out, with some relocating to different dorms or off-campus locations, while others canceled their housing contracts and moved back home. It remains to be seen what options will be offered to Taylor Tower residents.
For students eager to retrieve their belongings, Isaacs advised them to head to the tower's front desk rather than their rooms.
